This is a story about a man and his car that has gone from a daily driver with 113,000 miles on it, to Best of Show Corvette at the 2012 Corvette Chevy Expo.
Chris Johnson, an 11th generation Texan, ordered her up new. Chris, only 24 years old, was fresh out of graduate school when he decided he wanted to buy a Corvette. He picked his new 2002 ZO6 Corvette up at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY and drove her back to Texas. This particular Corvette has led a busy life under his care. Chris, greatly enjoying his car, has driven it as far west as the Pacific Ocean. He regularly auto crossed her for two years and even entered a high performance-driving event.

Rear Vues: 1967 - The 1st SEMA Show
If you hang around "car" people very long, you are sure to hear the name SEMA.
You might be asking, just what is a SEMA?
It is an event that has over 2,000 new automotive products on display, and over 2,300 companies filling over a million square feet held annually at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
"It all began in 1963 when a group of small manufacturers who were suppliers of performance equipment for early hot rods organized their fledgling industry and called it "Speed Equipment Manufacturers Association" (SEMA). From what I found, it was started by Roy Richter, Ed Iskenderian, Willie Garner, Bob Hedman, Robert E. Wyman, John Bartlett, Phil Weiand, Jr., Al Segal, Dean Moon, and Vic Edelbrock, Jr.

Racing Legend - Doug Hooper Passed Away
Content by Jim Gessner
10/3/2013Doug Hooper passed quietly after a 8 month battle with kidney failure.
2007 Corvette Hall of Fame Inductee Doug Hooper began racing in 1959 behind the wheel of his 1957 Corvette. A regular participant at Cal Club and SCCA Events, Doug's achievements note him as a world-class racer and one of the first drivers to have brought the Corvette to the international stage as a winning racing machine following his win in the “Times Grand Prix” in Riverside, California on October 13, 1962.
Chevrolet introduced the new Sting Ray Split Window Z06 racing option in October 1962 at Riverside Raceway. Dave MacDonald, Bob Bondurant , Jerry Grant and Doug all drove Z06 Split Window Corvettes. Billy Krause drove the first Shelby Cobra ever to race that day, but the Mickey Thompson sponsored Z0-6 driven by Hooper won the three hour race of 46 cars averaging 84.06 mph in front of 78,000 spectators.
In December 1962, at a special Z0-6 brake test session at Sebring, Zora Arkus-Duntov approached Doug and asked him to test his new secret project – the Grand Sport. After the test, Doug was scheduled to co-drive the Corvette Grand Sport with Billy Krause at Lemans in June 1963.
Doug drove at the 3 hour Continental at Daytona in mid February 1963, and after the race, the GM sponsored race program ended.
In the summer of 63, Doug raced all over the West and had many wins and opened “Doug's Corvette Service” in North Hollywood , California and created one of the premier Corvette and Rochester Fuel Injection repair shops in the country.
In 1989 in addition to the shop and racing, he added to his busy life and became a Reserve Police officer for L.A.P.D.
In 1993, Doug continued to stay active in racing and was asked to prepare and tour the country in the original #001, 1963 Grand Sport – the same car he had tested at Sebring some 30 years earlier!

Evolution of the Century-old Chevrolet bowtie © General Motors |
Chevrolet’s
Iconic Bowtie Celebrates 100th Anniversary
Origin still uncertain, but 215
million cars and trucks have worn the badge since 1913
DETROIT – Chevrolet’s
globally recognized bowtie celebrates its 100th anniversary this
year with 25 product launches helping the symbol find new roads around the
world despite an origin that is still uncertain.
In
1913, Chevrolet co-founder William C. Durant introduced the signature Chevy
bowtie on the 1914 Chevrolet H-2 Royal Mail and the H-4 Baby Grand, centered at
the front of both models.
Sixty million Chevrolets are on the roads worldwide today and the bowtie has adorned 215 million Chevrolets over the last century. A Chevrolet car, crossover or truck is sold every 6.39 seconds in one of 140 countries, and the brand set a sales record of 2.5 million in the first six months of the year. The bowtie’s centennial is marked by new entries, such as the Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel compact sedan in the U.S. and the Trax small SUV in 40 international markets.
“The Chevrolet bowtie is recognized around the world and has become synonymous with American ingenuity,” said Chevrolet Chief Marketing Officer Tim Mahoney. “Whether you’re pulling thousands of pounds through rocky terrain in a Silverado pickup or commuting in a Spark EV, Chevrolet’s bowtie will always be at the very front of your travels.”
While the bowtie has been present for 100 years, the details surrounding its origin are still uncertain. Stories range from Durant being inspired by the wallpaper design in a Parisian hotel to a newspaper advertisement he saw while vacationing in Hot Springs, Va. Durant’s widow and daughter have offered alternative explanations.
According to Margery Durant, in her 1929 book My Father, Durant sometimes doodled nameplate designs on pieces of paper at the dinner table. "I think it was between the soup and the fried chicken one night that he sketched out the design that is used on the Chevrolet car to this day," she wrote.
But in a 1968 interview, Durant’s widow, Catherine, said the bowtie design originated from a Hot Springs vacation in 1912. While reading a newspaper in their hotel room, Durant spotted a design and exclaimed, “I think this would be a very good emblem for the Chevrolet.” Unfortunately, Mrs. Durant never clarified what the motif was or how it was used.
But that nugget of information inspired Ken Kaufmann, historian and editor of The Chevrolet Review, to search out its validity. In a Nov. 12, 1911 edition of The Constitution newspaper, published in Atlanta, an advertisement appeared from by the Southern Compressed Coal Company for “Coalettes,” a refined fuel product for fires. The Coalettes logo, as published in the ad, had a slanted bowtie form, very similar to the shape that would soon become the Chevrolet icon.
Did Durant and his wife see the same ad – or one similar – the following year a few states to the north? The date of the paper Kaufmann found was just nine days after the incorporation of the Chevrolet Motor Co. The first use of the bowtie by Chevrolet appeared in the Oct. 2, 1913 edition of The Washington Post with the words “Look for this nameplate” above the symbol.
Founded in 1911 in Detroit, Chevrolet is now one of the world's largest car brands, doing business in more than 140 countries and selling more than 4.5 million cars and trucks a year. Chevrolet provides customers with fuel-efficient vehicles that feature spirited performance, expressive design, and high quality. More information on Chevrolet models can be found at www.chevrolet.com.

SAN ANTONIO – New from hood
to hitch, the 2014 Silverado 1500 is engineered to be stronger, smarter and
more capable than ever before.
Among the hundreds of improvements, large and small, are:
·
A trio of all-new EcoTec3 engines, a V-6 and two
V-8s
·
A stronger, quieter and more comfortable cab
·
A refined new interior with features and
connectivity tailored to the needs of truck customers
·
Revised steering, suspension and brakes for
improved ride and handling
·
Ingenious solutions for managing cargo in the
bed.
Even with all of the improvements, the base
prices for all three configurations of the 2014 Silverado 1500 – regular
cab, double cab, and crew cab – carry over from 2013. Buyers of all 2014 Silverado 1500s also will receive a standard
scheduled maintenance program for two years or 24,000 miles, whichever comes
first.
Silverado crew cabs with the available 5.3L EcoTec3 V-8 will begin
reaching Chevrolet dealers in May. The manufacturer’s
suggested retail prices for crew cabs start at $32,710, including a $995
destination freight charge –
the same as the 2013 model.
The crew cab will be joined this summer by a regular cab model and a
new double cab Silverado, which replaces the extended cab. Also available this
summer will be an all-new EcoTec3 V-6 with the most torque and highest towing
rating of any standard V-6.
Coming later in 2013 are an all-new 6.2L EcoTec3 V-8, engineered to
raise the bar for premium truck engines, and the High Country, a rugged,
luxurious Silverado tailored to the growing market for high-end pickups.
“When you combine the innovative features of the new Silverado with base
pricing equivalent to 2013 models and standard scheduled maintenance, Silverado
becomes a great choice for pickup customers, helping them save money when they
buy – and when they drive,” said Jeff Luke, executive chief engineer for
Silverado.
Innovative technology, tailored
for the way customers use trucks
Silverado’s innovative technology is tailored to the way customers use
full-size pickups, providing the power, efficiency, refinement and
dependability they expect from their trucks.
Examples include:
·
EcoTec3 engines that provide class-leading V-8
fuel efficiency and towing capability, without the cost and complexity of
turbocharging
·
High-strength steel that makes the frames and
cabs stronger and lighter, yet can take the pounding of towing, hauling and
off-road operation, year after year
·
The strategic use of aluminum alloys to reduce
the weight of engines, front suspension components, hoods and other parts
·
New interiors featuring ample storage, multiple
power and USB connections and available high-wear cloth for bench or bucket
seats
·
Chevrolet MyLink, which provides powerful
connectivity for work or family with simple, intuitive controls.
“Millions of hardworking Americans rely on full-size pickups to run
their businesses, earn a living, and take care of their families,” said Luke. “So
as we reengineered the Silverado for improved performance, refinement and
efficiency, we selected materials and technologies we were confident could get
the job done.”

at 285 horsepower (212 kW) and 305 lb.-ft. of torque (413 Nm), a 5.3L V-8
certified at 355 horsepower (250 kW) and 383 lb.-ft. of torque (519 Nm), and later
this year, a new 6.2L V-8.
All three EcoTec3 engines
feature direct fuel injection, Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation)
and continuously variable valve timing, a combination not found in competitive
trucks. The engines also use a compact overhead-valve design and weight-saving
components such as aluminum blocks and cylinder heads, to reduce mass, for
additional energy savings
All three provide the proven power, torque and dependability of a
large-displacement engine, seamlessly switching to four-cylinder mode to save
fuel during light-load driving. The 5.3L V-8 has EPA–estimated fuel economy of
up to 23 mpg highway (2WD models), the best of any V-8 pickup, and better than
Ford EcoBoost V-6.
Silverados equipped with the 4.3L V-6 will have towing ratings up to
7,200 pounds, the highest for any base V-6 in the segment. Silverados equipped
with the 5.3L V-8 and the max towing package, available later this year, will
have towing ratings of up to 11,500 pounds, which is more than any light-duty
pickup currently on the market.
Functional, aerodynamic
exterior: Silverado’s exterior design blends strong Chevy truck heritage
with a refined, modern aesthetic. The new design is more muscular, more functional
and more aerodynamic. A twin-port grille, full-width bumper and dual power dome
hood create a strong presence, which is carried through in sculpted body sides
and fender flares.
The new Silverado design is about much more than just looks, however. The
new front end is engineered to improve sealing for more efficient cooling, while
the roof and tailgate spoiler were shaped in the wind tunnel to smooth airflow
over the truck for reduced drag. New inlaid doors, which fit into recesses in
the bodyside, reduce wind noise for a quieter cab.
All-new interiors tailored to
truck customers: The all-new interiors of the 2014 Silverado 1500 reflect
the same focus on form and function. The upright instrument panel, six-gauge
instrument cluster and multiple storage options are tailored specifically to
the needs of truck customers. Controls are functional, logically placed and
easy to operate with work gloves on. Rear doors on crew cabs are larger, for
easier entry and exit, and rear doors on double cab models are now hinged at
the front for easier access, especially in tight spots.
The new Chevrolet MyLink provides easy-to-use connectivity for the job
site or the family vacation, with natural voice recognition and enough ports
and power outlets to support multiple devices.
© General Motors |
Stronger, quieter cab: The new
truck cab is stronger, with nearly two-thirds of the structure made from
high-strength steel, for a confident feel and improved safety. Similarly, the
main rails and key cross members of the updated frame are high-strength steel
with major elements hydroformed for reduced mass and improved strength.
New shear-style body mounts tune out both up-and-down and side-to-side
movement for a quieter, more comfortable ride. Double cab and crew cab models
have a set of hydraulic body mounts to further isolate the cabs. Combined with
numerous other acoustic and NVH (noise vibration and harshness) enhancements, the
intended result is a solid, refined feel with no loss in traditional truck
capability.
Chevy MyLink for powerful,
intuitive connectivity: Most 2014 Silverados feature MyLink with a 4.2-inch
or 8-inch color touch screen radio. The 4.2-inch radio, standard on 2WT and LT
models, includes Bluetooth for phone streaming, two USB ports, an SD card slot
and natural voice recognition. LTZ and High Country models receive an 8-inch
high-definition touch screen that enables users to scroll or drag through
menus.
Both MyLink systems feature intuitive, easy-to-operate controls for
major functions. Silverado also features four selectable themes for the display
screen and drive information center, which tailor the look of the displays to
the taste of the customer.
Improved ride, handling and
safety: The chassis of the 2014 Silverado includes a number of
customer-focused updates. A revised front and rear suspension and wider wheels
provide a more comfortable ride and more confident handling. Electric power
steering improves steering feel and reduces fuel consumption. New
four-wheel-disc brakes with Duralife™
rotors improve brake feel and potentially double rotor life.
Silverado will be available with segment-exclusive safety features such
as Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning with an Active Safety Seat,
and Front and Rear Park Assist. StabiliTrak with Trailer
Sway Control and Hill Start Assist are standard on all Silverados.
Smart solutions for cargo
management: The pickup box also benefits from this focus on providing
Silverado customers with the right tools for the job. The box is made from
roll-formed steel for increased strength and reduced mass, compared with the
stamped beds used by major competitors, and it features a range of smart
solutions for everyday life.
Silverado’s CornerStep bumper, combined with handholds built into the
new box rail protectors, makes it easier to access the box. The bed is also
available with new upper tie-down hooks, under-rail light-emitting diode
lighting, and an EZ Lift and Lower tailgate.
For the first time, Silverado 1500 crew cabs will be available with a longer
6’6” box, in addition to the previous 5’8” box, enabling customers to carry
more cargo while still being able to park in many garages.
Seven models offer provide
customer choice: The 2014 Silverado 1500 will be available in seven
distinct trim levels. Two work trucks will be available, a 1WT and 2WT, with
the 2WT adding features such as chrome bumpers, high-wear cloth seats and
Chevrolet MyLink with a 4.2-inch color touch screen.
Silverado LT and LTZ models provide additional features, such as an
8-inch color touch radio and trailering package on the LT, and a standard 5.3L
EcoTec3 V-8, leather seating, and dual-zone climate control on the LTZ. Z71
models with enhanced off-road capability are available in both LT and LTZ trim
levels. This fall, the Silverado High Country will debut, giving Chevrolet a fresh
new entry in the fast-growing premium pickup segment.

Engineered and validated for
demanding customers
Truck customers are among the most discerning and demanding in the
business. They know trucks inside out –
many have owned trucks for decades. They work their trucks hard, under
conditions that would shock many car owners. They have tough tasks to do, and
they expect their trucks to do them, without complaint. And they expect their
trucks to endure – the average age of a full-size pickup is now more than 10.4
years.
The team that designed the new Silverado went to extremes to design a new
truck that would exceed the demands of these customers.
For example, GM’s new full-size trucks will undergo more than 6 million
miles of durability testing in the torture chambers at the Milford Proving
Ground, over the deserts and mountains of Nevada and across the frozen flats of
Kapuskasing, Ontario. That’s equivalent to 240 trips around the earth. In
addition, the trucks will accumulate more than 7 million real-world miles
during final testing, bringing total test miles to more than 13 million.
The increased power, torque and efficiency of the new EcoTec3 engine
family resulted from an unprecedented level of computer analysis, including
extensive computational flow dynamics, to optimize the burning of air and fuel
in the cylinders. More than 10 million of hours of computational analysis went
into the engine program. More than 6 million hours – about 685 years’ worth –
of analysis went into the advanced combustion system alone.
Even the basics, like the new inlaid doors, were tested to the extreme,
with the doors undergoing nearly 150 truck lives’ worth of testing.
Founded in 1911 in Detroit, Chevrolet is now one of the world's
largest car brands, doing business in more than 140 countries and selling more
than 4.5 million cars and trucks a year. Chevrolet provides customers with
fuel-efficient vehicles that feature spirited performance, expressive design,
and high quality. More information on Chevrolet models can be found at www.chevrolet.com.
