2016 SEMA Coverage - Other Notes Continued...

SOME OTHER NOTES FROM SEMA

One of the many attractions at the SEMA and AAPEX expositions are the live (real time) demonstrations. The metalworking activity at Baileigh Industrial Tools really caught my eye. Using what appeared to be a body buck for a Shelby Daytona coupe, several workers from Yocum’s Rod Shop were busy at work hand-building the skin for the body. Wow. This was impressive. I know that there are many other businesses doing industrial tools, but this display was definitely addressed to the automotive group.

Sitting alongside the Baileigh workshop, a bare chassis for a Pro-Touring 1964 Olds Pro-Touring car, and is called Project Jetstar One. The project is being underwritten by John Beck of Progressive Building Services and is being built in conjunction with Jimmy Shine’s hot rod shop. The car is destined to raise money for the “Folds of Honor” charity group, which supports the families of service men and women who did not return, was on display. At this point, only the chassis was completed, but it was certainly another outstanding piece of metalwork too. You could clearly see the strength being built into the car. The modified air-ride suspension, exhaust passing through the frame rails and other features told me that this car (whether auctioned, raffled or just sold directly) is going to be a future winner.

Here is a list of displays that featured Corvettes (and a couple of extra ones):

If you stuck with me so far, let me just mention two other cars that were not Corvettes.

On Monday, Chip Foose unveiled his latest creation, Madam X, at the BASF booth. Madam X is based on a 1939 Cadillac 60 Special four door. The original four-door was rebodied to a two-door format by Marcel’s Custom Metal (Marcell and Luc Deley) and features a removable hardtop. Running gear is sourced from a 2015 C7 chassis and powerplant. The car was built for Wes Rydell.

Putting street cars to task is what the annual Optima Ultimate Street Car. With a range of tests for drivers to complete and a diverse field of almost 100 invited cars vying for the coveted title. Corvettes are a favored marque for this series of performance events in various locations across the country. For example, in 2014, Danny Popp won the title in his purpose-built Z06 – a car that’s been autocrossed from brand new, and over the years developed into an uncompromised, street legal performer. For the 2014 challenge, his car featured a Lingenfelter 388ci destroked LS7 engine backed up by a Tremec gearbox, Van Steel suspension, Baer brakes, and Forgeline wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich rubber. This year Danny Popp again captured the title.

The original C7 widebody, designed by TS Designs was first shown at SEMA in 2013. Since then, they built a number of variants, but this one remains pretty much faithful to the original.
