2016 SEMA Coverage - Other Notes Continued...

SOME OTHER NOTES FROM SEMA

Text and Photos By: Wayne Ellwood
One of the many attractions at the SEMA and AAPEX expositions are the live (real time) demonstrations. The metalworking activity at Baileigh Industrial Tools really caught my eye. Using what appeared to be a body buck for a Shelby Daytona coupe, several workers from Yocum’s Rod Shop were busy at work hand-building the skin for the body. Wow. This was impressive. I know that there are many other businesses doing industrial tools, but this display was definitely addressed to the automotive group.

Sitting alongside the Baileigh workshop, a bare chassis for a Pro-Touring 1964 Olds Pro-Touring car, and is called Project Jetstar One. The project is being underwritten by John Beck of Progressive Building Services and is being built in conjunction with Jimmy Shine’s hot rod shop. The car is destined to raise money for the “Folds of Honor” charity group, which supports the families of service men and women who did not return, was on display. At this point, only the chassis was completed, but it was certainly another outstanding piece of metalwork too. You could clearly see the strength being built into the car. The modified air-ride suspension, exhaust passing through the frame rails and other features told me that this car (whether auctioned, raffled or just sold directly) is going to be a future winner.

Here is a list of displays that featured Corvettes (and a couple of extra ones):

If you stuck with me so far, let me just mention two other cars that were not Corvettes.

On Monday, Chip Foose unveiled his latest creation, Madam X, at the BASF booth. Madam X is based on a 1939 Cadillac 60 Special four door. The original four-door was rebodied to a two-door format by Marcel’s Custom Metal (Marcell and Luc Deley) and features a removable hardtop. Running gear is sourced from a 2015 C7 chassis and powerplant. The car was built for Wes Rydell.

Putting street cars to task is what the annual Optima Ultimate Street Car. With a range of tests for drivers to complete and a diverse field of almost 100 invited cars vying for the coveted title. Corvettes are a favored marque for this series of performance events in various locations across the country. For example, in 2014, Danny Popp won the title in his purpose-built Z06 – a car that’s been autocrossed from brand new, and over the years developed into an uncompromised, street legal performer. For the 2014 challenge, his car featured a Lingenfelter 388ci destroked LS7 engine backed up by a Tremec gearbox, Van Steel suspension, Baer brakes, and Forgeline wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich rubber. This year Danny Popp again captured the title.

The QUICK JACK system has been very successful in the market. The ease of use is especially attractive to the hobbyist.

In addition to the VetteSthetics widebody, Corvette seen outside a second Corvette-themed as a F35 stealth fighter was displayed. The world of wraps is apparently going wild, and you can now dress your car in any style you wish…and at relatively economical prices, too.

Having absolutely no unique connection to the product, E-Z – UP protective canopies again displayed a very clean custom 1961Corvette. The implication, of course, is that it their tents are good enough for this car, they’re certainly adequate for your car too.

2016 SEMA REPORT - BESPOKE CREATIVE Kit for a C6 to Look Like a C7

Bespoke Creative has started to market a kit to give your C6 the look of a C7
Bespoke Creative has started to market a kit to give your C6 the look of a C7,

A design group called Bespoke Creative has started to market a kit to give your C6 the look of a C7. Naturally, the updating of the headlight pods is a major point, but the other features are less obvious at first blush. This red C6 features wider wheels covered by slightly flared fenders. The front bumper is modified and, at the rear, there are decorative panels, which attach to the hatch to give the illusion of a C7 rear window and a more square backlight. Also adding to the illusion is a carbon fiber air dam for the rear and a carbon fiber splitter for the front. As I said, it’s an effective illusion and probably quite cost effective….if you don’t count the paint.

2016 SEMA REPORT - MOTHERS POLISHES Displayed at White Callaway C7 Corvette

The Tread Wear tie dress-up system is quite simple. It’s a DIY job with stickers that you apply to your own tires. The process is quite simple. You order your desired design with tire size and the specific stick-ons for four tires will be sent to you for $132 (US), shipping included. In terms of installation, you can either go right over top of any raised lettering on your blackwall, or you can sand down the surface and have a smoother look. This one is a real giggle. The display car was a C7 with a red chrome wrap.

TOYO TIRES Displayed a wildly styled C6 ZR1 by Jon Sibal Design at the 2016 SEMA event.

Text and Photos By: Wayne EllwoodEach year, TOYO Tires mounts an outdoor display using a broad range of customized cars, which have chosen TOYO tires for their application. This year there was one Corvette in the mix. This car was wildly styled as a street racer, by Jon Sibal Design. I think the important feature that was just beginning to sink-in to my highly agitated brain was the absolutely totally ridiculous amounts of money that are spent on these cars...and the flares. This new style of flares was initially created by Liberty Walk for mostly Japanese cars but has since been copied by many other manufacturers such as Rocket Bunny Of course, once you add flares you have to fill the wheel well. In this case, the DPE Wheels and TOYO tires helped meet the challenge.

2016 SEMA REPORT - EDELBROCK PERFORMANCE displayed Larry Fitzgerald’s Red 1963 Corvette

Edelbrock borrowed Larry Fitzgerald’s red 1963 Corvette as their messenger. The car was built for Larry by Brown’s Classic Auto. It featured a modified interior suggestive of a race capability. Seats by TMI, modified door panels, upgraded console, and instrumentation, were amongst the most visible mods. As for the exterior, the red paint was enhanced with decorative steel mesh where C2s normally displayed more traditional chrome pieces or where vents were just an indication. Wheels are by Billet Specialties, and brake rotors are cross-drilled. But, with Edelbrock’s many years in performance engine products, our attention naturally went to the engine. In this case, it is a small block with Edelbrock’s own E-Force supercharger. These kits come in a wide variety of fitments, but all feature the Eaton TVS rotors.

Another radically modified C7 in the outdoor display was built by ESCC Motorsports and Stage 7. An owner name was not listed, but I presume it is a promotional car for ESCC Motorsports. The car has some very interesting Rotifort gold chrome 20” wheels, with Toyo Proxes tires, sized 275-30ZR- 20 (front) and 345-25ZR-20 (rear). Based on the stance and the use of Liberty Walk flares, we can also assume the car uses an air ride system. Regrettably, the paint was not exactly show quality, especially on the flares. More of the race touches included a carbon fiber front splitter, carbon fiber rear valance panel (with added strakes for air management), and a roll cage. Severe window tinting prohibited any significant observation of interior features.

This C1-style conversion is owned by Doug Graf and was built for him by CR Coachworks…formerly Classic Reflections...located in Lakeport, WA. The body is well known for its carbon fiber panels, and the whole thing is based on a C6 Corvette, painted to a racing-style livery chosen by the customer. The car features a full tilt front end, power top, custom interior, custom Redwall Turbine wheels, stinger hood, and sidepipes. The car was originally constructed using a C6 405HP 6.2 engine but has been rebuilt with a 2013 505 HP 7 liter LS7.

At the MOBIL-1 display, a red-hot C7 previously seen here in 2015 was again on display. This one is built by Retro Designs: Speed and Custom. Wheels were “Fifteen52” by Apex RSR and tires were Michelin Super Sport tires in 295/30ZR/19 and 345/30ZR/19. Power upgrades included a custom fabricated airbox and very large turbocharger provided by East Coast Supercharging. With this little bit of technology, the LT1 engine is stated to produce 700 HP and 650 lb-ft. The aero body work was by Stance Craft, and the rear diffuser was made by APR Performance. The car has a cage installed inside a mostly stock interior.
